Background of the Study
Graph theory has numerous applications in various fields, including computer science, engineering, and educational systems. One of the promising applications of graph theory is in the modeling of university course prerequisite structures. These structures are often represented as directed graphs, where courses are nodes and prerequisites form directed edges between them. Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, located in Aliero LGA, Kebbi State, currently faces challenges in managing complex course prerequisite structures due to the increasing number of degree programs and courses. The use of graph theory to optimize and visualize these structures can help students, faculty, and academic advisors make informed decisions regarding course selection and graduation requirements.
Statement of the Problem
The complexity of course prerequisite relationships at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology makes it difficult for students to understand the sequence of courses they need to take for degree completion. Current systems rely on static course catalogs that are not dynamically linked to prerequisite data, leading to confusion and inefficient course planning. By applying graph theory, the university can create a dynamic, visual representation of course prerequisites, which would help students and academic advisors navigate the course selection process more effectively.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide a foundation for the application of graph theory in higher education, specifically in the management of course prerequisite structures. It will benefit Kebbi State University of Science and Technology by improving the clarity and efficiency of the academic advising process, helping students better navigate their academic paths, and optimizing course scheduling.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the application of graph theory to the course prerequisite structures at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, within Aliero LGA, Kebbi State. It will not extend to other academic management issues, such as student enrollment or course content management.
Definitions of Terms
Graph Theory: A field of mathematics that studies graphs, which are mathematical structures used to model pairwise relations between objects.
Course Prerequisite: A course that must be completed before a student can enroll in a subsequent, more advanced course.
Prerequisite Structure: The set of relationships between courses that determine the sequence in which they must be taken for program completion.
